RE: Dead Horse Ranch AZ State Park

We winter in the Verde Valley. So MANY things to see: Sedona & red rock country,Jerome, Verde Valley Railroad, Montezuma Castle, Montezuma Well, Tuzigoot, Cathedral Rock at Red Rock Crossing just outside Sedona. Sedona airport for sunsets. Near Flagstaff: Sunset Crater, Wupatki, Walnut Canyon, Grand Canyon, Oak Creek Canyon, Meteor Crater, Arizona Snow Bowl (it's high so good views), Grand Canyon Railway at Williams. Probably lots that I've forgotten. Dead Horse Ranch S.P. is a nice park. We've stayed there several times. Last time was three years ago. No sewer hookups` then. Don't know about now. If you want full hookups there are several RV parks in and near Cottonwood and Camp Verde. We recommend our winter home: Rancho Verde RV Park a couple of miles from I-17 toward Cottonwood, just off rt 260 on Horseshoe Bend Road. Have fun. It's a great area.

RE: Looking to purchase our first TT

By all means get a used trailer for your first one, especially if you've spent little or no time in one. With zero experience it's hard to know what you want/need. By getting used, if you've found out that it doesn't suit, you won't lose your you know what. We certainly learned a LOT on our first TC and it turned out to be unsuitable. We bought used and got our money back when we sold it. That never would have happened had we bought new.

RE: GM in Preliminary Talks With Chrysler

If the merger goes through, will you be able to get a Chevy/Cummins or a Dodge/Duramax?

RE: Recommend Campground

Doesn't answer your question but, if you're going to Lost Maples, go in March or April and look up our friends, Les & Jane Hall, who volunteer there leading bird watching walks. If you have any interest in birds at all, you won't be disappointed.

RE: Putting in slide outs for winter

There's a small park about 10 miles from us where people leave their trailers year around. There are several where the slides are left out all winter and they do not have awnings over the slides. Seems to me that's just asking for bad news. Snow piles up on top of the slides, of course. Sooner or later it'll could intrude through the seals. Later it'll melt, etc and then......

RE: Geo Tracker towable?

We had a 92 Tracker with stick shift. It is towable 4 down. The owner's manual specified transmission in 2nd gear, transfer case in neutral, and stop every 200 miles to run the engine for a couple of minutes to circulate the transmission fluid. Then it was good for another 200 miles. Kinda sounds like a pain but it wasn't because we had potty stops, get a drink stop, or just take a break stop. Towed it thousands of miles without incident.

RE: Good Sams or AAA

We've had Good Sam for several years. Have used them for towing, lockout, and tire changes. Don't always get service as soon as we'd like but that depends on where we are and where they have to come from. We were in a remote (sort of) area in Colorado where the tow had to come from 80 miles away over Wolf Creek Pass and through road construction. Not their fault. Once had to wait about 2-3 hours because slippery roads caused many accidents and the police requests took precedence over getting towed out of our driveway.

RE: Cold feet....in slow motion....

We're trying to ignore the doom & gloom. Naturally our investments have taken a hit but they always come back at some point. We will NOT sell. We've taken a paper loss. If we sell we've lost the money and the solds can't come back for us. Actually we're doing some buying. Unless you have taken a big hit on monthly income, I'd say ignore and go someplace that makes you happy, wherever it might be.

RE: Rejected Because RV over 10 Years Old

We've never run into the 10 year rule but were once refused at a Mesa, AZ RV park because our 5er was too small. Keep your trailer if you like it. There are MANY parks that would be glad to have you.

RE: Parking trailer on a garden for the winter

No matter how much you water and fertilize you're not going to grow it into a 40' 5er. Bummer.

RE: Talk about a service life, 34 years!

Has any park denied you entrance because of age of your unit or don't you use that kind of camping area?

RE: Natchez Trace worth the trip?

There are three free campgrounds on the Trace (no hookups) and many state parks and RV parks not far off.

RE: The Special Joys of Small Trailers....

Yizit's comment about better gas mileage with the smaller trailer is interesting. Our larger and heavier trailer gets better mileage than our smaller and lighter trailer (by about 10 feet and 2500 pounds). Our larger trailer has a more rounded front, propane tanks inside the body of the trailer, and has a fully enclosed underbelly making it much more aerodynamic. Weight is not the only factor in the gas mileage issue.

catalytic heaters fueled by propane

Does anyone have a handle on costs of catalytic heaters vs. electric heaters? Our furnace blower is so loud we turn it off when watching tv and use a small electric heater. I was wondering how the catalytic heaters compared to electric heaters in the way of heat produced and cost of operation. Thanks.

RE: when you drain your water heater

Open the pressure relief valve for 15 seconds or so before removing the rod. Reduces the gush by a lot.

RE: Replace furniture with "real" stuff

A friend said futon is Japanese for hard after sleeping on ours. That was several years ago. I felt one in a store the other day and it was considerately softer than ours (which we no longer have).

RE: Motorhomes in Aspen, Colorado? NOPE

Our last visit there was for one purpose only and that was to visit the John Denver memorial garden right near downtown. Wonderful spot with lines from several of his signature songs carved in several rocks. A peaceful relaxation spot. We went, saw that, left.
